The brief wasn't to design a new leg. It was to find a second life for one that already existed. Sabai's City table legs were built to do one job: stand upright and carry a tabletop. My task was to see what else they could do without changing what they are.

The answer was to rotate them ninety degrees. Turned perpendicular to their original orientation, the legs stop reading as supports for a surface above and start reading as supports for storage, holding up a waterfall-edge Ash bench top instead. That shift in role created a new problem: the legs are heavy, geometric, and structural by design, while the bench top needed to feel light. I split the difference by opening a deliberate gap between the two leg assemblies. The gap does no structural work. It exists to break the visual mass of the legs and let the bench read as something resting lightly on top of them rather than braced between them. The result is a piece that keeps the strength of the original hardware but cantilevers off it visually, an object that looks like it's floating despite being built from parts designed to hold weight.
